Frequently Asked Questions

Do you require fenced yards?

Not necessarily.  Some dogs may be perfectly suited to apartment living or living in a home without a fenced yard.  We take each dog and adopter on a case by case basis.

Do you do cat testing with the dogs?

We do not test our dogs with cats as this process would be very stressful for our cats.  Some dogs come in with a known history around other animals; otherwise, we will make recommendations based on a dog’s observed behaviors while at YVAS.  Any new pet should be carefully monitored in its new home until everyone gets fully acquainted.

We can also provide information on how to introduce cats and dogs for better success.

My partner cannot come for a meet and greet today. I really want this dog I have met, now what?

The good news is that we can place an animal on hold with an approved application and a $20 hold fee.  This fee is nonrefundable; however, if you go complete the pet’s adoption that $20 will be applied toward the animal’s adoption fees.  Adult animals can be placed on hold until the end of that business day.  We do not accept holds for puppies or kittens.

I did not find the perfect fit today, now what?

Don’t give up!  New dogs come into the shelter daily – all different ages, breeds, backgrounds, etc.  We do our best to keep our website updated, but we strongly encourage adopters to keep checking in person.  Hang onto your application and we can apply it to that perfect dog when it does come in.

When will you have puppies?

We rarely know what is coming in our doors or when.  We could have two litters of puppies at the same time, then not see any for months.  Be sure to frequently check our website or stop by in person.

Can you put my name on a list for a certain breed?

Unfortunately, we do not have a waiting list at the shelter.  We adopt close to 2000 dogs annually and simply do not have the resources to maintain a waitlist. We encourage adopters to frequently visit the shelter and watch our website as we never know what breeds we’ll receive.

Can I leave my application at the shelter?

Due to the volume of paperwork we receive, we are unable to store applications at the shelter.  We suggest that you keep your completed application and we can apply it to another dog in the future.

Can I place an animal on hold?

Customers can place an animal on hold with an approved application and a $20 hold fee.  This fee is nonrefundable; however, if you go complete the pet’s adoption that $20 will be applied toward the animal’s adoption fees.  Adult animals can be placed on hold until the end of that business day.  We do not accept holds for puppies or kittens.
